DIY Scratching Post

DIY Scratching Post: Step-by-Step

Guide Scratching Post (Materials)

DIY Scratching Post: A 100 mm diameter PVC pipe, 60 cm in height. 2 pieces of particle board from old furniture. Carpet 12 mm rope — 23 meters. Furniture brackets — 8-10 pieces. Screws — for attaching the base to the pipe. The base can be circular or square, as long as it comfortably fits your cat. The top base should be slightly smaller than the bottom base.

Step 1

If you decided to make circular bases, mark and cut the particle board with a jigsaw. If making square bases, proceed to step 2.

Step 2

Cover the top of the bases with carpet and staple it down. Wrap the edges of the bases with rope, tapping it flat with a hammer beforehand. Use small nails to secure the rope.

Drill a hole on the side of the pipe near the bottom, thread the rope through, and tie a knot. Tightly wrap the rope around the pipe, making sure to keep the edges of the pipe even. Do not cut the end of the rope. Use rotational movements to compress the rope along the pipe, and then secure the rope to the top base. IMPORTANT: The edges of the pipe must be perfectly even, especially the bottom edge. Otherwise, the scratching post will wobble.

Step 4

Attach the pipe to the bottom base using metal brackets. You can make your own brackets or purchase furniture brackets from a store. They should be narrow, about 3-4 on the base.

Step 5

Attach the top base to the pipe. Call your cat to come and inspect and get used to their new scratching post.
